Summary
What does cruising have to do with the digital nomad lifestyle? Why am I writing a post about the 14th Nomad Cruise event?
The goal of this event, which offers multiple travel options, is to give prospective and active digital nomads the opportunity to network, learn, relax, and recharge, all in one. I saw it as an investment opportunity from the very beginning. I let the idea of participating mature for a few weeks, then on the last but one day of the year I booked my cabin on the ship.
The phenomenon of the Nomad Cruiser found me relatively quickly, a few weeks ago. The organizers are using catchy phrases to highlight the three journeys of 2025. For example:
- Learn, Work, Play. Make more connections in a week at sea than you would in months on land!
- Join us for 7 days of growth, adventure, and unforgettable moments onboard.
- Scale your business, boost your career, or start something new.
- Join us for the ultimate 7–day adventure in the Mediterranean.
From these points, I think it is clear what the purpose of this boat trip was. In the last point, the Mediterranean Sea is already one of the three travel options. But what are the specific travel plans in 2025?
Where will Nomad Cruise go in 2025?
There are three cruises to choose from in 2025:
- In February, Antarctica is the destination, with 50+ participants.
- In June, you can sail from Marseille to Athens, with 300+ participants.
- And in October-November, you can take part in a 27-day trip from the USA to Australia..
I would have been very interested in Antarctica, but there will be a sixth as many people there as on the Mediterranean route. And the American route is very long and expensive, so I initially chose the French-Greek route from the options that were within my desires and my budget. I think that if I have the opportunity later, I will visit Antarctica, and in return I will have the opportunity to meet more people now. It is also important to note that on this cruise I will travel from Europe to Europe, while the February tour can be sailed from Argentina to Argentina, and the autumn one from Seattle to Sydney, so in these two cases the prices of other trips are also much more expensive.
Heading to the Mediterranean Sea
So I chose the summer trip and let my thoughts decide whether to attend the event or not. The answer came while I was relaxing before the end-of-year Depeche Mode party and before the performance of Never Let Me Down I received the confirmation email that they would be waiting for me in Marseilles this summer. The specific itinerary looks like this:
I plan to be in France a few days before departure and check out the second largest city. Regarding the other end of the sailing: I was in Athens twice in 2024, but it will be no problem to spend a few days there a third time within a year.
What can you do on the ship or in the cities?
The published program shows a fairly busy calendar, but the organizers warn you not to let FOMO drive your decisions during the days of the trip. I’m pretty sure I’m looking forward to some very exciting days.
Choosing a cabin
There are three types of cabins to choose from during the trip. Windowless, single-window and panoramic window cabins. In each type, you have the option to rent a cabin alone or share it with someone.
I quickly decided that I would rather spend money on sightseeing than renting a room alone, so I was sure to choose a shared room. Also, I did not want to spend hours in a windowless cabin, even if I probably would not spend my time on this ship sleeping. The single-window cabin seemed like the optimal choice, but when I showed it to my friend, he pointed out that the panoramic window room was only 200 EUR more expensive, so I ended up booking it.
Since I could not tell my roommate’s name – only that I wanted a separate bed and not a double bed – it will be a surprise to me how the organizers will arrange a man of about my age to stay with me.
I was a bit disappointed that I could choose a Dulcinea of the opposite sex from the booking options. Maybe I’ll talk to the organizers about that after a few cocktails on the boat.
