That was the message, and a song.
I was in Da Nang, in the middle of the bridge over the Han River, when I received the message. That’s where I heard this song for the first time in my life.
I thought of you.
We walked together on the bridge.
And we understood each other.
The Wanderer’s Song (I Still Don’t Know Where I’ll Sleep Tonight)
I still don’t know where I’ll sleep tonight,
Tomorrow feels so terribly far away.
The open road beneath my feet and the sky above my head—
Those are the only two things I know for sure.
It doesn’t matter where tomorrow morning finds me.
The cities are all old friends of mine.
There’s always a good friend, a few old loves,
And one or two songs upon my guitar strings.
All the great rivers find their way to the sea,
And my dreams keep running with them.
How I wish I could be as swift as the wind,
And make the whole wide world my home.
One day I would find my way to you,
Even if seven borders lay between us.
You would welcome me as though I were the one
You had been waiting for all those years.
What a pity we were not born for that.
And I still don’t know where I’ll sleep tonight,
Tomorrow feels so terribly far away.
The open road beneath my feet and the sky above my head—
Those are the only two things I know for sure.
